Are You Cooking with Butter or Margarine?

November 4th, 2008

I want to share a quick story with you that might be an eye opener for you. I was watching a show on the Food Network last week with a friend and both of our mouths were watering as the chef was preparing what looked like a very delicious, satisfying meal. At one point my friend laughed and said “Yeah, I could probably make better tasting foods if I used that much butter. The least he could do it replace that butter with margarine.” That’s when the conversation took a turn she didn’t see coming.

“Why would he want to use margarine instead of butter?”, I asked her knowing what the response would be. “Because it’s healthier of course”, she replied. That’s when I grinned and asked her, “Did you know that margarine eaters are twice as likely to have a heart attack as butter eaters?” She thought I was joking at first. But then I explained that many items on high cholesterol food lists to avoid aren’t as bad for your arteries as we’ve been led to believe.  So be careful and when in doubt, choose a natural food over an artificial food.
